Should a new HVAC system be on your Christmas list this year? How can you tell? Our article explains...

Eventually, no matter how diligently you care for your home’s HVAC system, it’ll need to be replaced with a new, more efficient model. If you’re pondering whether or not to add it to your list this year, here’s a few signs that’ll help you know if adding a new HVAC system to your home is needed this Christmas or will be in the near future.

Have your energy bills increased this year?

It’s normal for your monthly energy bills to go up and down as the season changes, but to identify if your costs have truly increased, compare your statement against the same month from the last year or two. If nothing has taken place to cause an increase, then all things being equal, your bill should be similar to previous years. If you do notice a sudden increase in your heating and cooling costs, you should immediately call us and schedule a service call.

Does your system struggle to maintain the temperature?

If your HVAC system seems to be continually turning on and off throughout the day – struggling to keep a consistent temperature – you have a problem. It could be as simple as dead batteries in your thermostat. Still, regardless of the cause, you should take action quickly to avoid long-term damage and ever-increasing energy bills.

Is your system old?

If your furnace or air conditioner is more than 15 years old, the EPA recommends that you replace your HVAC system with a new model. Once a system reaches a decade in age, many of its main components begin to wear out, increasing the chance of unexpected breakdowns. Keeping an older system in operation can actually cost you more money because of more frequent repair costs and increased energy bills. But, with regular, proper care and maintenance, it’s not unheard of for an HVAC system to last beyond its expected lifespan.

Are frequent breakdowns frustrating you?

Minor breakdowns aren’t unusual for HVAC systems as they age, but your service tech should be inspecting the major system components if you’re needing repairs every year or more often. Persistent issues are a clear indication that there’s a bigger problem, which may mean it’s time to get a new system.

How you can extend your system’s life

Replacing your heating and cooling system is one of the most costly home maintenance tasks you’ll encounter as a homeowner. Because of this, you probably want to delay the purchase for as long as possible. Here’s a few tips to help prolong the life of your system.

Schedule seasonal tune-ups twice a year. Once for your AC in the spring and once for your furnace in late summer or early fall. We offer a very reasonably-priced maintenance agreement that’ll prevent major expenses later on.

Change your filter often. If you’re not comfortable changing it on your own, or you just don’t have the time, call our pros and have a certified service technician check your filter during your seasonal tune-ups.

Check your AC condenser. Your air conditioner’s condenser is located outside your home and built to withstand the elements. But, you should still check on it frequently to make sure it hasn’t been damaged by storms or obstructed by leaves or other plant life. Your condenser needs space to breathe and work efficiently.

Get a programmable or smart thermostat. Modern thermostats make energy efficiency easy. They are simple to program and can even be controlled from anywhere using your smartphone or tablet!
